You may be among the few who do not really see the need to acquire a skill before or after graduation from the higher institution.
But why won't you?
There are some facts you need to know about skills acquisition.
Personally, I don't see skill acquisition as an escape route from unemployment only, I also see it as a way of life.
What do I mean?
You need to learn and apply skill in almost everything you do before you can do it well. This ranges from cooking, driving, even walking, you were taught how to walk when you were a baby.
If you are very skillful in your work, whether you like it or not, you will stand out in that field compared to someone who is just doing the job for doing sake.
That aside,
Acquiring skills is as important as having to eat food everyday which if you don't hmmm!
You go hear ween!
That means you will be kicked aside.
In case you are looking for some reasons why you should acquire skills especially in today's economy, below are some listed out to boost your mind.
Check them out!
1. You will create a better life for yourself
Yes, this is true, a skillful individual who knows his craft very well will not have to lament over hardship and unemployment.
All you just have to do is develop your skill to a point where you begin to solve serious problems for people using your skill and they will look for you.
2. You will escape to some level the hardship faced by others.
I said to some level because this depends on the type of skill you have and the effort you have put in to develop that skill to be able to solve problem in the required field.
3. You have potentials embedded in you.
Another beautiful reason you should strive to develop a skill is because there is something unique you can do, you have a lot to offer more than you think you can so don't let it lie waste just like that, push for it, engage your brain and watch how jobs will seek after you instead of you seeking after jobs.
4. Learning a skill leads to discoveries and innovation.
There is this thing I noticed about getting started and I have also heard a lot of successful people talk about it and that is;
When you get started at something, the more you advance in it, the more you get better at it, the more you get better at it, the more you discover ways to do it better.
5. No matter how the government try, white collar jobs will not reach every body.

This is a hard truth, difficult to digest but the earlier you admit it, the better for you.
I don't know if this happens to other people but personally, most at times I do try to estimate the number of youths we have in the universities across the nation, the number of graduate yearly and joining the labour market, now compare this to the little available jobs.
It's okay you have to go to school to acquire knowledge but after you're done acquiring the knowledge, what next?
Go look for a job?
Well, good luck if you find one but what if you can't find any?
You can try this instead,
Use the knowledge you have acquired in school and try to solve problems related to that field of study or learn a new skill and use it to solve problems for people.
Believe me people don't want to hear this side of the story because it sounds difficult and hard to attain compared to getting a job where you're sure of your salary every month (if you even see it) but if you can, it's very rewarding and worth the effort.
6. Financial independence
On campus, I tried talking to some students about acquiring skills and starting small businesses, some of them took it with gladness while a lot others ignored me and it got me thinking, why? Is it that they don't understand what unemployment is?
On a deeper look, I got to understand that most of those who ignored me, their pocket money is just one call away so they don't understand what it means to hustle to get money.
Then I asked myself this question, how long?
I heard a student say something like, when she was in year one, her parents checked on her from time to time, sent her pocket money regularly but as she advanced to a higher level, the frequency reduced until what she was hearing was manage what you have till we send you money again.
Come'on, this means that your dependency on your parent for survival has a limit, it might not be done on you yet but you better prepare for it before it takes you unaware.
Bottom Line:
Quit the entitlement mentality.
Yes, the government should provide jobs but in a case where the job doesn't reach you, what do you do?
To help your life and destiny, you learn some unique skills, get employed, employ yourself or start up a business and move on.
