I have gist for you.
You may or may not have known about this latest trend going on among most Nigerian graduates.
It's something you must have heard about but maybe you didn't see it as anything.
I decided to share it here so that you will understand how it has affected a lot of people already.
What is this latest trend?
(Whispering: bring your ear closer, I don't want to shout...)
A lot of Nigerian graduates now opt for skills acquisition to enable them cope with unemployment.
They learn one skill or the other ranging from vocational skills to digital skills.
Some have already figured out what they want to do and are on it already unfortunately, a lot of them are yet to decide while some still have strong hopes on white collar jobs. Huuh! That's it.
This is not a new thing just that it's on the rise now and there is something I want to point out about it which I will mention later in this post.
This may seem like a very good move and I am excited about it because it is true that not every graduate will be able to secure white collar jobs no matter how intelligent they are.
In the case where there are no jobs, a lot of graduates have already begun to learn some useful skills to enable them survive the bad economy.
You may have had a dream of working in a very big company while you were in school and after you graduated, you couldn't secure a job in that company;
What do you do?
Sit back? Complain? Blame the government?

I don't think complaining or blaming the government will move you any closer to your dream.
So then what?
Jump into skills acquisition?
Maybe yes but hold on first.
Just before you think of learning a skill to help you cope with the situation at hand, I want to quickly share three things I believe will help you just so that you don't end up in yet another frustration.
They are:
1. Discover your passion
This has helped a lot of people because most at times, they get to realize that what they studied in school has nothing to do with their dream, passion or life purpose.
So after graduating from the higher institution, they go ahead and chase their dreams which is what they're really interested in.
Before you jump in to learn a skill how well will that skill help you fulfil your dreams? Or how does it resonate with what you have always wished to accomplish?
You may want to read this post about a lady who decided to focus on her passion for fashion after graduating with a degree in philosophy.
2. Discover what is in vogue
Some skills are not really in demand in this present century e.g typing, while some are in high demand and very lucrative.
If you say you want to learn a skill and you go to learn something that no one is really interested in, you will end up in yet another frustration.
3. Discover how you can use the knowledge acquired in your field of study to solve problems or add value to people in the society.
It could be that all you need to do is use the knowledge you acquire to start up a business or go into mini production and that will give you a source of income instead of waiting for a white collar job with folded hands.
Another thing I want to point out which I said I will mention in this post is the fact that learning a skill is not something you only do when you're done with school.
What do I mean?
If you observe, you will notice that it is only in this part of the world that students spend their holidays at home, watching movies and just whirling away time while waiting for school to resume so that they can go back to school.
The best way to make use of your holidays is to learn skills, these are the things that add up on your CV to give you an edge over others.
Now that you've gotten the gist about what most graduates are doing after they're done with their studies, I will love to read your comments.
Are you a graduate, Have you landed your dream job already? Or what's next for you.
Even if you're still in school, what's your plan? Would you mind sharing? Drop a comment let's discuss.
Don't forget to share this post, someone somewhere may need to read it.
